BOSP Brighter Opportunities for Special People

Young Adult's Services

10.00am to 3.30pm (5.5 hours) at the Pioneer School, Ghyllgrove, Basildon, SS14 2LA

The BOSP Saturday Club is delivered at the Pioneer School in Basildon. The fantastic facilities at the school allow us to provide the young adults with the consistency that so many thrive on. Young adults attending have the opportunity to go swimming in the hydrotherapy pool where our trained lifeguards for the disabled ensure that the environment caters for the individual with appropriate music and lighting. The interactive soft play room and the adventure playground are extremely popular with the more active, who enjoy burning off excess energy. BOSP hires highly qualified outside trainers to provide music, dance and sports coaching. The young people also have the opportunity to spend time in two sensory rooms as well as try their hand at arts and crafts and messy play.

Swimming kit and a packed lunch and drinks are needed.

10.00am to 3.30pm (5.5 hours) Out & About and at the Pioneer School, Ghyllgrove, Basildon, SS14 2LA

At BOSP's Let's Connect Club, the young adults meet at the Pioneer School then leave to spend the morning enjoying social activities such as bowling, Drop-Zone, climbing wall or the cinema, along with lunch.

The Pioneer School lies within close reach of the Festival Leisure Park, Basildon Sporting Village and Basildon Town Centre, which provide greater opportunities for encouraging independence and life skills in the local community, whilst supporting the young person's personal development.

This club allows the young people to practise life skills, such as handling money, decision making, turn taking and road safety. After lunch out in a restaurant, the youngsters then return to the Pioneer School for the afternoon session where they can enjoy any of the other activities and catch up with their friends.

Sometimes Let's Connect goes further afield, utilising BOSP's wheelchair accessible mini-bus, to places such as Southend, Crazy Golf, Foot Golf in Brentwood.

At various times and venues, including Wat Tyler Country Park and DIS (Disability Inclusion Society)

'Skills for Life'  is designed to increase confidence and promote independence, integrating young people aged 18 years+ with disabilities out into the wider community by providing life skills training.  This will include communication and social skills, decision making, money handling and employability skills, travel training, domestic and nutritional guidance to support their independence.

Specifically for those who are managing transition to adulthood, further education, employment or moving into supported/independent living.

In addition to mentoring/coaching young people who have additional needs, the programme will involve fun social activities vis our Chill Zone club.

Recent activities have included Canal Ability, Adventure Island, bowling, cinema, The Ministry of Science show, Colchester Medieval Festival, Drop-Zone, pantomime, Romford Dog Track, night clubbing. The young people will often eat in restaurants as part of their trip, go shopping and make use of public transport or the BOSP mini-bus, whilst being fully supported by BOSP staff. The young people are encouraged to be as independent as they can possibly be.

The young people are part of our Youth Engagement Group and get involved in deciding which activities they would like to do in the future. BOSP does its best to incorporate these into its planning.
